Kenneth Branagh Plans To Direct 2010 Thor Movie

“Kenneth Branagh is negotiating to direct ‘Thor,’ the next Marvel Comics property that will be turned into a live-action film by Marvel Studios. Pic will be released in 2010. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige’s choice of Branagh is surprising, as Branagh hasn’t really directed an action-heavy film since his debut on ‘Henry V,’ a bloody telling of the British king’s conquest of France. ” [Link]

This could be a good thing. Branagh’s Shakespearean background might bring the epic quality a hero like The Mighty Thor needs to have to be successful. I just hope (as ever) that the eventual screenplay stays true to the character’s origins and story as described in the comics. If they try to make this a more “straight” Norse-mythological story (possibly pitching it as “Beowulf II”) a lot of comics fans are going to be Mighty Disappointed.
