Michelle Wie, Natalie Gulbis Fail To Qualify For U.S. Women's Open

“Michelle Wie has failed to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open. Wie shot a 74 in the second round of qualifying Monday, and missed by one shot. The 19-year-old from Hawaii was competing for 30 spots at Woodmont Country Club, where most LPGA Tour players went the day after the LPGA Championship.” Link

If the USGA just applied the same qualification exemptiom standards for women as they do for men, bboth Wie and Gulbis would be in, because they are well within the top 50 players in the world rankings. The USGA needs to protect the world’s best like they do for the men. Instead, we have about 25 players, who will shoot a round in the 80s; an absolute JOKE. The disparity in qualifying scores at the different sites is a pitiful; 23 players who qualified shot scores higher than Wie or Gulbis and 12 shot 10 shots or HIHGER. The fact is the USGA is a little slow on the uptake when it comes to the women and doesn’t really spend anytime revising and tweaking the rules for them like it does for the men. Now, you will finally see them change the rules for the women to emulate the men, but it took something like this to make it happen.
