Sotomayor Nomination Passes Committee Headed To Full Vote In House

The nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court has passed the judiciary committee by a vote of 13-6. Only one Republican, Lindsey Graham, voted for Sotomayor. Sotomayor is expected to easily be confirmed by the full senate.

Judge Sotomayor is clearly qualified to serve on the Supreme Court and she has demonstrated a judicial temperament during her week-long nomination hearing. Judge Sotomayor has had a distinguished career of public service. She is well regarded in the legal community and by her peers. I will vote to confirm Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.”

“In an 8-1 ruling, the justices said that Safford Middle School officials violated the Fourth Amendment ban on unreasonable searches with their treatment of Savana Redding. The court ruled that the officials could not be held financially liable but left it to lower courts to decide if the school district could. While children’s advocates and civil liberties groups cheered the decision, others suggested the high court may have created further problems for school systems by failing to make clear exactly when school administrators can strip search students and when they can’t.” Link
